Comtek Network Systems Welcomes Cabinet Secretary Ken Skates MS and Bangor University to Showcase Innovation

Oct 13, 2025

Date: This morning, Ken Skates MS, Cabinet Secretary for Transport and North Wales, visited Comtek Network Systems’ headquarters in Deeside. Our CEO, Askar Sheibani, welcomed him and outlined how Comtek supports the UK’s critical infrastructure and drives sustainable technology. The visit gave us the chance to show how Comtek repairs, refurbishes, and reuses telecoms, networking, and roadside equipment. These services help to keep the nation’s critical infrastructure working reliably. From complex network hardware to roadside traffic signs and monitoring systems, we extend the life of assets that transport networks and communities rely on every day. As a result, we cut electronic waste, reduce costs for customers, and strengthen the sustainable economy. In addition, our focus on repair and reuse keeps roadside systems and networks resilient, safe, and efficient.

Partnering for Innovation with Bangor University

A highlight of the visit was our partnership with Bangor University. Together, we are leading Comtek and Bangor University roadside fibre optic research. This work has the potential to transform the way road networks are monitored and maintained.

This programme also involves Sorrento Networks, part of the comtek.co.uk and the UK’s only manufacturer of DWDM equipment. Comtek provides repair expertise, Bangor University contributes research strengths, and Sorrento delivers advanced optical transmission technology. Therefore, the partnership brings together all the right skills to deliver breakthrough solutions for transport infrastructure.

The research uses fibre optics to identify faults in real time. By spotting problems as they occur, the technology improves road safety, reduces disruption, and enables smarter transport infrastructure. For example, roadside traffic signs can adapt to changing conditions. Meanwhile, monitoring systems can provide transport operators with instant updates so they can act quickly.

The collaboration between Comtek, Sorrento Networks, and Bangor University shows the strength of innovation in North Wales. Furthermore, it demonstrates how businesses and universities can work together to deliver research that makes a real difference.

A Greener and Safer Future for Wales

At Comtek, sustainability is central to our mission. We work to six principles: Repair, Refurbish, Reuse, Recycle, Resale, and Research. By keeping equipment in use for longer, and by investing in fibre optic research with Bangor University, we help customers reduce their environmental impact. At the same time, we maintain high standards of performance and reliability across both telecoms and roadside systems.

.The project with Bangor University and Sorrento Networks is a natural extension of this mission. It reduces faults, improves safety, and supports the Welsh Government’s ambition for greener transport infrastructure. In addition, it highlights how North Wales is becoming a hub for technological innovation with national and international importance.

Looking Ahead

The visit from the Cabinet Secretary strongly endorsed the work that Comtek, Sorrento Networks, and Bangor University are doing to shape the future of transport technology. We showcased the skills, expertise, and commitment that exist here in Deeside and across North Wales.

At Comtek, we believe innovation and sustainability must work together. By combining research, repair expertise, and forward-looking partnerships, we are creating a future where technology serves both people and the planet. Sorrento Networks is the UK’s only DWDM manufacturer. This makes the comtek.co.uk uniquely positioned to protect critical infrastructure, advance fibre optic research, and deliver smarter, safer, and greener transport networks.
